He received two Pulitzer Prizes during his journalism career. He was honored in 1981 for spot news photography while a photojournalist at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was honored again in 1985, working for the Philadelphia Inquirer, for his feature photographs from Angola and el Salvador. He was a member of The Daily Texan staff his senior year. After college, he joined the El Paso Times and later the Star-Telegram as assistant managing editor and associated editor. He has been a visiting professor at UT-Austin, worked for the Baltimore Sun, National Geographic and received a Best Photographic Reporting Award from the Overseas Press Club. He has also been honored at the World Press Photo Awards.

He is the former publisher and general manager of the Waxahachie Daily Light and also the 95th president of the Texas Press Association. In 1962, he was a press aide to John Connally during his first race for Texas governor. He was also part owner of the Stephenville Daily Empire, founding director of the Waxahachie YMCA and served as president of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, executive director of the Waxahachie Family Welfare, chairman of the Bluebonnet District Boy Scots and director of the Waxahachie High School Emergency Assistant Program. He died in 2004.

He is a Pulitzer Prize recipient for editorial cartooning. He is also a children’s book author and illustrator, director, screenwriter and is best known for the comic strip “Bloom County.” His first regularly published strip was published in The Daily Texan in 1978. He has produced five children’s books and 11 best-selling cartoon collections. Breathed’s writing has been featured in several publications and he produced the cartoon art in the motion picture “Secondhand Lions.” His children’s book was adapted into a short film produced by Disney. He and his wife support animal rights and his books promote animal adoption.
