Editorial Division 2 Back

  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Dallas College - Richland
    Entry Title: Journalistic freedom
    Entry Credit: Staff
Judge Comment: The toughest job in an editorial is to propose a solution. This editorial's solution is new legislation to protect student journalists. In doing so the piece educates the reader about the legal history of prereview of student journalists' work and the unfortunate effects.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Tarrant County College
Entry Title: Limiting expression threatens our First Amendment rights
    Entry Credit: Nanda Acharya
Judge Comment: Senate Bill 2972's overreach triggered editorials from across the state's student press and this one did a good job of underscoring the free speech restrictions. It pointed out that the law repealed free speech legislation that was far superior, a point left out of many editorials.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Del Mar College
Entry Title: American students’ freedoms threatened
    Entry Credit: Anja Thomas
Judge Comment: A social media post by President Trump is a slim reed on which to build an editorial given that there are so many such posts. But this editorial did a good job of pointing out the ramifications to students if such a post was fully fleshed out into federal action.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: Midwestern
Entry Title: The truth about transgender identities
    Entry Credit: The Wichita Staff
Judge Comment: This piece deserves mention if only for the boldness of its subject.
  • Competition Comment: None
