Sports Feature Photo ( Division 1) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: UT-Arlington
    Entry Title: Storybook ending
    Entry Credit: Ronaldo BolaƱos
Judge Comment: This photo is excellent. The technical aspects are all there- exposure and composition are well done. What really sets this image apart is the peak emotion and moment. The photographer anticipated a moment and moved quickly to get the shot. Well done all around. I would have liked to have more information about the stakes of the game in the caption to explain the emotion.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Baylor
Entry Title: Retiring Brittney Griner's jersey
    Entry Credit: Kassidy Tsikitas
Judge Comment: This is a great image. Everything in the frame helps tell the story, and it is well composed and well exposed. The moment is right on and looking at the image makes me smile. Great job. I would love to see a more specific, AP-style caption.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Texas Tech Toreador Media
    Entry Title: Tossing tortillas
    Entry Credit: Makayla Perez
Judge Comment: This is a cool photo! Its very original and the composition helps tell the story. The technical aspects are all good. The timing with the fireworks and tortillas is well done and we are close to the action, seeing moments and facie expressions. I would love to know the student's name in the caption.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: A&M-College Station
Entry Title: "Now announcing your starting line-ups for the Aggies....."
    Entry Credit: Chris Swann
Judge Comment: I like this photo. It's a nicely caught quiet moment at the beginning of the game. I appreciate the photographer being willing to look for those moments at the beginning of games. The composition and exposure are well done and are creative, which adds to the storytelling in the image. While its not peak emotion, it is definitely a moment.
  • Competition Comment: This was a great category. There are some really nice moments in here. The winning photographers did a great job looking for emotion and finding peak moments and reactions. Some images were well composed and exposed, but lacked the critical moment- that peak reaction or emotion. Some entries lacked the correct files and made it hard to find the image to judge, unfortunately.
