Overall Design - Newspaper ( Division 4) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Northeast Texas Commmunity College
Entry Title: The Eagle Spring 2024
Entry Credit: Liliana Torreblanca , Eagle Staff
Judge Comment: Strong entry. Definitely shows a command of design tools and a willingness to go big where needed. Good job!
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: Dallas College - North Lake
    Entry Title: NLC Issue 47-01
Entry Credit: Ti-Ying Li, News-Register Staff
Judge Comment: Solid issue. Couple of spacing issues between headlines and stories, and I'd avoid spreading photos out instead of grouping them together where able, but this is still good work!
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: St. Mary's University
Entry Title: Vol. 112 Issue 06
Entry Credit: Victoria Olguin, Rena Estala, Laura Artunduaga
Judge Comment: Love that you tried to do some big, bold designs. That takes guts, and guts are half the job. watch for where wrapping text makes the text look weird or hard to read and I'd go lighter or less solid on background colors, but those things aside, this is very promising.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: Mary Hardin-Baylor
Entry Title: The Bells Nov. 11, 2024
Entry Credit: Xhaxany Cuellar, Jackson Keenan, Bradley Melchor
Judge Comment: Designers show fundamental knowledge of guiding principles and also lots of potential. Avoid dropping photos in the middle of text and instead anchor those at the top of columns and spanning full column widths. Otherwise, good entry.
  • Competition Comment: Lots of potential here! Love to see it. General guidance is to use text wrapping in a very "follow-the-rules" way: Group art and don't crowd the type. But this category shows a ton of promise and excited for these designers' futures.
