Competition Comment: Before I make comment on the winners, let me say this. The feature category for the most part is the largest because it's the bread and butter of editorial photography. Overall there was a wide range of a subject matter to work with. But, there’s a lack of cropping and composition to most of them. Most photos lacked both creativity and moments. Posed or theatrical events slide in rankings because the photographer was just there pointing a camera at what was alredy choreographed. Several photos had no captions to support the photos. There is a field in the competition to write one if it didn't have one published.
This being said, I enjoyed the jewelry maker photo. I may have cropped a bit tighter with the flame and face. Those two elements are the best part of the photo. The Fall Fest had a nice balance of angle, action and moment for second place. And third was just a nicely lit portrait from a good story.
