TIPA Awards 2024

Editorial ( Division 1) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: University of North Texas
Entry Title: Editorial: Students must have a say in Intercollegiate Athletics Fee increase
Entry Credit: North Texas Daily Editorial Board
Judge Comment: Choosing a topic that hits readers's pocketbook is always a good start for an editorial and this one does. Editorial puts facts into effective context, especially history of student athletic fees. Strong editorial opinion all the way through the piece and still using the facts necessary to make a point.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: UT-Austin
Entry Title: Was that really necessary?
Entry Credit: Lucero Ponce, McKenzie Henningson
Judge Comment: A traumatic clash on campus demands an editorial and this editorial answered that need. Needed a headline more to the point. Opinion was strong through the editorial. All involved probably read every word so such an editorial should use every fact to drive opinion rather than a reciting of the news story. Good piece.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: UT-Arlington
Entry Title: Why students should care about Texas Legislature
    Entry Credit: Christine Vo
Judge Comment: A good editorial on a subject that not many busy college students think about, but should.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: Texas State
Entry Title: Main Point: There’s more work to be done
    Entry Credit: Staff
Judge Comment: Challenging one of the sacred cows on an American college campus, football, is a brave thing.
