Entry Title: Texas has banned university DEI offices — what now?
    Entry Credit: Drew Shaw
Judge Comment: A well-written, in-depth story about how this Texas law affects university DEI efforts across the state. The author did an excellent job breaking down all parts of this story, from what DEI is to how universities can continue their initiatives.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: SMU
    Entry Title: SMU's Pampered Pony
    Entry Credit: Caleigh Daugherty
Judge Comment: This story had it all: A mascot, history, a presidential cameo and yes, poop! Great work by the author detailing the history of SMU's mascot, which may not be known by many — including those on campus.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: UT-Arlington
Entry Title: AISD Fire Academy sparks future firefighters
    Entry Credit: Leo Rosas
Judge Comment: A look inside a fire academy and how trainees become firefighters. This was informative for the reader and also acts as public service journalism. Who knows? Somebody could read this story and decide they want to be a firefighter, too.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: UT-El Paso
Entry Title: El Paso reaches breaking point as migrants flood downtown
    Entry Credit: Itzel Giron
Judge Comment: A story that puts a human face on what is truly a humanitarian crisis. Great work by the author to talk to those who are most affected.
  • Competition Comment: Narrowing this field down to four was difficult, but it highlights the great work being done by student journalists. All entrants should be proud. These four selections, though, were the cream of the crop. These stories combine excellent writing, reporting and intriguing topics.
