Judge Comment: Battalion crew, great work. A myriad of important topics covered in these samples. Your staff is knowledgeable and confident. I particularly loved the insider look at "the controversy" and the creative sports concept to interview insiders from the opposing team. I would suggest using actualities when possible instead of reading quotes. There were also a couple of sloppy editing and production moments (think mic placement), but the strength of the reporting and interviewing push you to the top. Congrats! Keep up the good work.

Judge Comment: Good work. This is an informative news program with strong production and topics of interest to students and the community. I appreciate your use of actualities, and music underscore adds to listener interest. Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference between editorial content and ads. I would try to make that distinction a little more clear by not issuing calls to action in stories. (e.g., "Make sure to go to this game", etc.) Great job everybody. Keep working hard!
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: UT-Rio Grande Valley
    Entry Title: Vaquero Radio

Judge Comment: I'm proud of you all for putting together a competent radio program for the Valley. I love your stories, which are of importance to students but also the community, and your use of actualities was appreciated. Keep working on making delivery more interesting and smoothing out production by keeping audio levels consistent refreshing sweepers. Overall, very impressive!
  • Competition Comment: This was a hard competition to judge because you are all winners in your own right. Radio and podcasting are hard, but you've each put together good products with competent reporting. Good luck! Alex Driggars Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
