Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Tyler Junior College Entry Title: Issue 12 Entry Credit: Marie Salazar, Asia Johnson, Brooklyn Gundling, Chris Swann Judge Comment: Great front page. You always want to lead with strong images. Throughout the issue, the images and graphics were all used well also. My main concerns were layout issues, typography and use of space. Just try to make sure headlines are squeezed next to text, images or break lines. It makes it look like someone designed the page and didn't have anyone else edit it. My favorite thing about the issue was page 8. It was a fun way to show off music.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: St. Mary's University Entry Title: Vol. 110 Issue No. 06 Entry Credit: Demi Bestor Judge Comment: Everyone loves Grogu, so good call on having him be the star of the issue. My main concern is graphics. For example, on page 3 both mugs are practically lined up together for two different stories. One could've easily been moved to the opposite side or right in the middle.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: North Lake College Entry Title: Overall Design Entry Credit: Heather Sherrill, Joanna Mikolajczak, Amelie Baquero Judge Comment: Nice and clean, but the paper needs to work on spacing. There's too much white space near the headlines. Either make the font larger or come up with a different way to stylize bylines to fill it up.
Place Name: Honorable Mention Contestant Name: Northeast Texas Commmunity College Entry Title: The Eagle - Northeast Texas Community College Entry Credit: Eagle Staff Judge Comment: I chose y'all as honorable mention because I see the potential. You have it, but you need to execute it better. Be honest; if you saw this issue on a rack, would you pick it up? The cover images are not interesting. People looking at a computer screen and a building mug? I'm sure your staff might've had better firefighter file art to have that be the lead. If not, everyone loves dogs. A cutout of a dog on the cover would've been great. Always try to think of what's going to make people stop and be interested.
