The design just needs a few tweaks and this page would really be fantastic. The masthead at the top should not compete with the editorial cartoon. Instead, I would fold the masthead content with the contact/letters policy at the bottom of the page. And then move the editorial to the top. Really like that thumbs up/down feature. In the editor's column, don't make the reader jump over the mug box. Instead, move it to the top of the second column.

And good choice leading with the column about deafness. But the cat image competes with this really nice column. I think it just needs some rearranging.
