Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Rice Entry Title: Rice to move Founder’s Memorial within Academic Quadrangle Entry Credit: Channing Wang, Robert Heeter Judge Comment: This entry hits all the benchmarks for a well designed, clean, communicative photo illustration that helps tell a visually challenging story. Even though it is a relatively simple illustration, sometimes less is more! The elements are all of high quality, thoughtfully placed, colors are visually pleasing, and it tells the story perfectly.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Stephen F. Austin Entry Title: Mental Health Entry Credit: Ariana Bowles Judge Comment: Again, even though these are relatively simple staged photos that aren't difficult to capture, they're technically sound and incorporated into a clean design – sometimes less is more! All together, this tells the story and draws the reader in better than photos could alone.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Richland College Entry Title: Russia invades Ukraine Entry Credit: Alex Ortuno Judge Comment: I love that the artist is trying something different and conveying mood and story through the colors and bold elements. This entry might have risen above others if some basic design elements had been improved upon a bit.
Competition Comment: Some feedback for entries that did not place – remember to be intentional with each element you add and alteration you make in post-production. Incorporating technically sound elements and following basic design principles will always put a piece higher in the rankings. Adding additional photos or other elements and toning and filtering in post-production must be done carefully and intentionally.
