Judge Comment: Quite the undertaking. Anchors seemed well prepared. Nice graphics for vote tallies. At 2:12, lighting on male anchor could be tweaked a little. At 2:40, audio seemed hollow. In the Beyond the Hilltop segment, could have used a super for the reporter. Both anchors should cut down on hand gestures.

Judge Comment: Lots of interesting stories. When the anchor did the tease "how they did on their midterms," it was his best performance: he smiled and seemed more natural than in much of the other portions of the show. A little more practice with reading a prompter will help him be more natural. Take a few more moments when putting a mic on a guest to hide the cable. It especially stood out on Amielia because of her light colored shirt. And, this is a little thing: the opening voiceover that says "students like us..." doesn't sound at all like a student.

Judge Comment: Good variety of stories. I especially liked the use of the fast motion video when preparing the new equipment. The audio levels seemed to vary quite a bit from segment to segment. The interview with the new professor was especially hollow, as if she wasn't wearing a mic. Inserting some graphics during the "reader" stories would really help keep viewer interest. My most severe comment is that the anchors were almost always not looking at the camera. That becomes very distracting. I'm sure it's because you don't have a true teleprompter system on all the cameras, so maybe having the anchors use paper scripts (like the old days!) would be better.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention

Judge Comment: As with the other entry from this school, the biggest issue is the anchors not looking at the camera. Identifying supers would be good for the anchors. Anchor on the left introduced a story by saying "I met with Marlena..." but the VO was from the other anchor. That confused me. The really fast pan across the food pantry shelves was somewhat distracting...and that same shot was used more than once. Pretty severe lighting on the interview with Mark Young. For the Foghorn Entertainment segment, I think you could work on some more creative set design.
  • Competition Comment: I went ahead and judged both entries from Del Mar College, even though the rules say only one entry per school.
