Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Brookhaven College Entry Title: Skateboarding Benefits Entry Credit: Taijai Wallace Judge Comment: Skateboarding isn't the first thing I think of when I think of sports column subjects, but I decided to get over that because of the passion shown and because this seems like a subject that is affecting the actual readers of this paper. The author touches on the desires of the skaters while not dismissing the concerns of non-skaters. I'd like a follow-up. Is there a place near campus where skaters can enjoy their sport safely?

Competition Comment: I was disappointed in the lack of local subjects among these entries. Anyone who was interested in the Super Bowl already watched the Super Bowl. Anyone who was interested in reading about the Super Bowl already read about it on a site you can't compete with. This goes for all national subjects. You all write for small-college sites and papers. You can offer something ESPN can't and the Morning News and Chronicle probably won't: knowledge of and a unique perspective on your school's teams.
