Feature Story Division 5 Back

  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: A&M-San Antonio - El Espejo
Entry Title: Lives Robbed: Forever in the 4th Grade
Entry Credit: Miranda Rodriguez, Sarah Cervera
Judge Comment: This did a great job at providing details and a comprehensive look at a very sad reality. While understandable given the topic area, the writers should try to avoid editorializing on the news even in feature writing.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: A&M-San Antonio - El Espejo
Entry Title: Sex, Drag & Rock 'N' Roll
    Entry Credit: Miranda Rodriguez
Judge Comment: This was an interesting article and provided good context and perspective. I think it would have been stronger to decide to make it a true feature OR a first-person perspective piece. Right now, it tries to be both and falls flatter because of that.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Northeast Texas Commmunity College
Entry Title: Athlete trades sandy beaches for rodeo arena
    Entry Credit: Ian Griffin
Judge Comment: This was an interesting feature piece on a fairly unique story. The writing could be tighter and I think some work on the pacing and structure would improve this piece. Also, watch how you attribute quotes.
